Donald Trump‘s son says the US President is not a racist and can only see one colour — green, the colour of money.
Eric Trump appeared on Fox and Friends and defended his father following the furore over Mr Trump labelling some countries “shitholes” during a meeting on immigration protection.
The Washington Post reported Mr Trump became frustrated after politicians floated reinstating protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan deal.
According to two people briefed on the meeting, Mr Trump said: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”.
Mr Trump suffered a backlash over the comments and was accused of being racist, but his son called the suggestions “total nonsense”.
“My father sees one colour, green. That’s all he cares about. He cares about the economy,” he said.
Mr Trump denied ever calling the countries “shitholes” and tweeted: “This was not the language used.”
The White House did not deny the language, nor did the several Republicans in the meeting.
Mr Trump said the language he used in the meeting was tough, but was not what was reported.
Senator Dick Durbin, the only Democrat in the meeting room, disputed the President’s account.
“When the question was asked about Haitians … he said, ‘Haitians? Do we need more Haitians?”
Mr Trump claimed the Democrats “made up” his comments about Haiti.
